- Torrevieja Desalination Plant
With a production capacity of 240,000 m3/d, the Torrevieja Desalination Plant is the largest facility among the planned desalination plants in Spain's "Plan Agua" [“Water Plan”], as well as the largest in Europe and the second-largest plant in the world to use reverse osmosis technology.
The plant has not only been designed to produce water that complies with the current legislation for water supply, but also with stringency levels (e.g. boron: 0.5 mg/l), which allow for its use in all types of agricultural irrigation. The design of the facility was completed with an advanced study on the integration of the landscape with the surroundings, bioclimatic buildings and installation of thermal and electrical solar energy.
The desalination project is a key part of the South Australian government’s Water Proofing Adelaide Strategy. It will provide Adelaide with half of its annual water usage and is powered by sustainable energy sources.
The desalination plant in Tampa Bay (Florida) is the largest facility of its kind in the United States.
