ACCIONA is building the terminal for the future airport, which will have a surface area of around 743,000 m2 distributed over four levels. It is estimated that 68 million passengers per year will pass through the giant building.
Designed by architects Norman Foster and Fernando Romero, it will be X-shaped and combine cutting-edge architecture with sustainability and functionality criteria for facilities, guaranteeing the smooth flow of passengers in the airport transit zones, shopping and restaurant areas.
The terminal will be housed in a continuous lightweight, quasi-aerodynamic membrane which will form the walls and roof, supported by 21 large funnel-shaped columns. The modular mesh structure is extremely light in response to the requirements of the site and will minimize its environmental impact.
Both the materials (primarily steel, aluminum and glass) and the design are intended to make the most of natural light and facilitate natural ventilation, reducing energy consumption. The building will also be self-sufficient in terms of power and water. The new terminal will include specific features compatible with LEED (Leadership in Energy & Environmental Design) Platinum certification.
The project also includes construction of 95 aircraft docking points at the terminal and 68 remote boarding gates, as well as departure and arrival lounges, a baggage reclaim area and service hubs (mechanical, electrical, plumbing and sanitation installations, fire prevention and the baggage system).
