Bridge over Clarence River at Harwood

ACCIONA,as part of Acciona Ferrovial Joint Venture (AFJV), has been engaged to design and build the new bridge over the Clarence River at Harwood, located on the Pacific Highway, in New South Wales.

General information

  • Location: Harwood, NSW, Australia
  • Our role: Design and construct
  • Infrastructure: Design and construction of 1.5km single deck bridge
  • Project value: Part of the overall AU$4.36 billion Woolgoolga to Ballina Pacific Highway upgrade
  • Estimated completion date: End 2019

Key Features

Construction of the new bridge involves:

  • Design and construction of a new 1.52 kilometre bridge over the Clarence River, about 30  meters downstream from the existing bridge. The length of the bridge over the Clarence River will span 620 meters, with a vertical clearance above the river of at least 30 metres for marine traffic to pass.
  • The new bridge will be a dual carriageway bridge, with two lanes in each direction.
  • There will be local road works at the northern and southern abutments.
  • AFJV is working with Roads and Maritime Services (RMS) to develop and implement innovative and efficient design solutions which will reduce the overall construction and operations budget.

The project is part of the larger AU $4.36 billion Woolgoolga to Ballina Pacific Highway upgrade and is jointly funded by the state and federal governments.

Once complete, the upgrade will improve road safety, reduce travel times and increase transport efficiency.

Current Status

The bridge over the Clarence River at Harwood project has celebrated a significant milestone with permanent land and river piling now underway. This project is part of the Woolgoolga to Ballina Pacific Highway upgrade.

The project is gaining momentum as 12 permanent land piles north of the Clarence River have been built. There are now sixteen permanent piles in the Clarence River which were built using two barges. Marine piling is taking place on the northern and southern banks of the Clarence River, moving towards the centre of the river. Pile excavation and concrete installation for both land and marine permanent piles is now underway.

The precast yard is nearly complete with the shed from Pacifico’s project in Macksville being delivered and installed in sections during the coming weeks.

The project team is continuing to work closely with Roads and Maritime Services, its delivery partner Pacific Complete, to deliver the 1.5 kilometres bridge, which is the longest on the 155 kilometre upgrade.

The project team is now fully established at the site compound on the north of the Clarence River and is growing in number as the project progresses.

The Australian and NSW governments are jointly funding the $4.36 billion Woolgoolga to Ballina upgrade. The upgrade is expected to be completed by 2020.
